My Birthing Experience
I will like to share a personal story of the birth of my two children. These births were both interesting yet different.
My first son was born in my home country Nigeria. On that faithful day, I woke up expectant because I wanted to have my baby on my Grandmothers birthday (as we had a close relationship). Like I had wanted, the signs of labor showed up the day before my desired day of delivery and i packed my bags and went to the hospital. I just assumed it would be a stroll into the hospital and a stroll out with the baby but alas it was several hours of pain and discomfort. No Pain reliever was offered, the Nurses and Doctors weren't too helpful but the good thing was my Mum-in-law and husband were there to hold my hand. The Baby eventually came on this special day (my grandmothers birthday) through virginal delivery and was healthy too.
Some 3 years after, this time in the United States of America, my daughter was to be birthed and like her brother, I had chosen a special day too. Similar to my experience with her brother, signs of labor came a day before this special day. Although the birth pains were similar, the process was different. I felt I was in an environment where I was safe and secure, I perceived the doctors and Nurses were professionals and more importantly they had appropriate tools to work with. Medication to relieve pain was available on demand and though I had no immediate family members around other than my friend, I was surrounded with professionals who showed they had the best interest of the baby and mother at heart. I was relaxed and comfortable. I gave birth on that special day (my sisters birthday) to a healthy baby and mother was very relaxed.
The emotional state of the mother is very important for the birth and care of a healthy baby , its important that the woman is in a place that she is sure she will get adequate care for both herself and her baby.
